You know that the four-year graduation system (CBCS- Choice Based Credit System) has been implemented in all universities in Bihar since 2023. Even after three years, there is confusion among students regarding the receipt of certificates and degrees under this graduation system. Not only students, but many colleges and their professors also appear confused. Consequently, students are unable to receive timely and accurate information, resulting in continued confusion. This confusion surfaced when some universities, such as Magadh University, Veer Kunwar Singh University, and Patliputra University, released notices for admission to Semester 7 for students.
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, there was no uniformity across Bihar universities regarding enrollment in the seventh semester of the four-year undergraduate program, exacerbating student difficulties. It was being said that only students with a 7.5 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) after the 6th semester results would be admitted to Semester 7. However, Magadh University and Veer Kunwar Singh University, Ara, withdrew this notice, while Patliputra University, Patna, stood by its position. Now, a notification has been issued by the Raj Bhavan, Patna, clarifying this matter. In this article, we will understand this new notification.

A notification issued by Bihar Lok Bhavan, Patna, Memo No. L/ORD/03/2026-1416/GS(I) DATED: July 4, 2026, has resolved the confusion surrounding admission to the fourth year of graduation in Bihar universities. The notification issued in 2023 amended the exit option rules. What will be awarded if one leaves after one year? What certificate will one receive after two years? What degree will one receive after three years? And what degree will one receive after four years of study? When will one receive an Honors degree? When will one receive an Honors with Research degree? Students can easily understand all these questions below. Read each point carefully.
- If a student wishes to exit after completing one year, i.e., two semesters (40 credits), they will be awarded a 'UG certificate'. However, this will require students to complete an internship (4 credits) during the summer break.
- If you wish to exit after completing 2 years, i.e., 4 semesters (80 credits), you will be awarded a 'UG Diploma'. This will also require students to complete an internship (4 credits) during the summer break.
- If you wish to exit after completing 3 years, i.e., 6 semesters (120 credits), you will be awarded a 'UG Degree in Major'. This includes completing an internship.
- Now let's talk about the fourth year, i.e., semesters 7 and 8. The fourth year is optional; you can choose to pursue it; those who don't want to study for four years can leave after completing three years. After completing the fourth year, you will receive a 'UG Honours' (160 credits) honours degree in the major subject. If a student has a 7.5 CGPA or higher after completing the sixth semester, they will also be offered the option of an 'Honours with Research' degree (160 credits).
- Those with a CGPA of less than 7.5 can get an Honours degree after four years of study.
- Those with a CGPA of 7.5 or more, but who do not wish to pursue an Honors with Research degree, can only pursue an Honours degree.
- For the Honours with Research degree, students must earn 12-credits from a dissertation/report (a mentor will be assigned to determine the topic and methodology).
- - BA/B.Sc/B.Com (Honours) = 160 credits
- - BA/B.Sc/B.Com (Honours with Research) = 160 credits
