As is widely known, both one-year and two-year postgraduate (PG) courses will now be available. The one-year PG course is intended exclusively for students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. For those who have completed a three-year undergraduate degree, the PG or master's degree course will span two years. The structure and regulations for both these courses have been finalized and implemented.
Four-year undergraduate courses have been running in all universities across Bihar since 2023; the first batch to complete this four-year program—thereby becoming eligible for the one-year PG course—will graduate in 2027. A new syllabus for these PG courses has been released, based on the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. A uniform syllabus will be implemented across all universities in Bihar (such as Patna University, Patliputra University, Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Magadh University, Bihar University, Veer Kunwar Singh University, etc.). This new PG syllabus will come into effect from the 2026-27 academic session.

This syllabus will now be applicable across all universities in Bihar and will apply to all postgraduate (PG) courses starting in 2026 (unless the university or Raj Bhavan introduces any modifications).
Note: Currently, the syllabus has been released only for the first year of the PG program—specifically for Semesters 1 and 2.
BIHAR PG NEW SYLLABUS
A two-year postgraduate course will comprise a total of four semesters, while a one-year PG course will consist of two semesters. However, students have the option to exit the course after completing two semesters (i.e., one year); this exit option is available only for the two-year PG course, and students leaving after one year will be awarded a PG Diploma certificate. The syllabus released currently covers only the first two semesters; effectively, you can only download the syllabus for Semesters 1 and 2 at this stage.
The remaining syllabus will be released before the completion of Semester 2.
Postgraduate Curriculum Framework
Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, M.A./M.Sc./M.Com. programs (in relevant subjects) at universities in Bihar will be conducted in accordance with the UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes (PGCF) and the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
This program offers students the option to pursue either a two-year or a one-year master's degree program, provided they have completed a four-year undergraduate degree meeting the requisite credit and eligibility criteria set by the UGC.
The curriculum is designed under the 'Choice Based Credit System' (CBCS) and incorporates a combination of Core Courses (CCs), Discipline Specific Electives (DSEs), Generic Electives (GEs), Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs), Ability Enhancement Courses (AECs), and Value Added Courses (VACs). The program aims to impart advanced theoretical knowledge, computational proficiency, research aptitude, and practical skills in Statistics and its applications.
Each academic year will consist of two semesters. To fulfill the program's credit requirements, students must successfully complete a prescribed combination of core, elective (discipline/generic/open), skill enhancement, ability enhancement, and value-added courses each semester.
The syllabus and study materials will be periodically reviewed to keep pace with emerging developments in academia, research, industry, and public policy. Teaching-learning methodologies may include lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions, statistical computing exercises, case studies, project work, field-based applications, and research assignments. Practical training will provide hands-on experience with statistical software packages, data analysis techniques, computational tools, and the resolution of real-world problems.
Assessment will be conducted through Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) and End-Semester Examinations (ESE), in accordance with the rules prescribed by the relevant authorities from time to time. Components of assessment will include assignments, presentations, practical examinations, projects, oral examinations (viva-voce), and written examinations.
Students will have the opportunity to select elective and generic courses aligned with their academic interests, subject to course availability and institutional regulations. This approach will foster interdisciplinary learning and enable students to specialize in specific areas within the broader scope of the discipline.
