How to calculate CGPA: In Bihar's 4-year CBCS graduation system, which was implemented in 2023 (under NEP 2020), students are awarded SGPA in each semester's result, which continues until the 6th semester. After that, the CGPA is displayed in the 6th semester's result. In this article, we will learn about SGPA and CGPA, the difference between the two, and how to calculate CGPA. A calculator is also provided below to calculate CGPA from SGPA. Regardless of your university in Bihar, you can calculate your CGPA.
This CGPA calculator for graduation (BA, BCom, or BSc) is based on the formula provided in the notification issued by Bihar Raj Bhavan. It is for Lalit Narayan Mithila University Darbhanga, Bihar University Muzaffarpur, Veer Kunwar Singh University Ara, Patliputra University Patna, Patna University, Magadh University, Purnea University and all other universities of Bihar.
What is SGPA?
The full form of SGPA is Semester Grade Point Average. Students receive this every semester, meaning they receive SGPA in their results after completing one semester, and then SGPA again after completing the second semester. This SGPA is displayed separately in each semester's result. This is the result for only one semester.
What is CGPA?
The full form of CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average. This is achieved when we combine the results of more than one semester, meaning SGPA. One semester is 6 months long, and there are two semesters in a year. So, if we need to tell someone our results for one year, we convert the SGPA of both semesters to CGPA. CGPA combines the results of more than one semester.
Why CGPA?
Suppose we have to fill out a form for admission or a job and are asked what marks/percentage we got in graduation. Then we shouldn't write the SGPA or marks of different semesters. There should be a single term that reflects the result of your entire graduation. That is why we write the CGPA, which is calculated by adding up each semester.
How is CGPA calculated?
For example, let us take
20 credits times 6.75 SGPA, where 6.75 is the SGPA for the first semester. Similarly,
20 credits times 7.2 SGPA for the second semester.
Now, to check the 1st year result or CGPA,
first add 20 times 6.75 to 20 times 7.2, then divide by 40 (this is the CGPA for one year, so divide by 40; if it were for two years, divide by 80; if it were for three years, divide by 120; and if it were for four years, divide by 160). The result obtained after division will be the SGPA. In this case, 6.9 CGPA.
One more example -
Sem 1 = 6.75 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 2 = 6.75 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 3 = 7.20 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 4 = 7.40 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 5 = 6.90 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 6 = 7.20 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 7 = 7.10 SGPA x 20 credits
Sem 8 = 8.40 SGPA x 20 credits
6.75 SGPA x 20 credits + 6.75 SGPA x 20 credits + 7.20 SGPA x 20 credits + 7.40 SGPA x 20 credits + 6.90 SGPA x 20 credits + 7.20 SGPA x 20 credits 7.10 SGPA x 20 credits + 8.40 SGPA x 20 credits = 1154
1154/160 = 7.2 CGPA
Note: If you want to check your CGPA for a three-year graduation, calculate using your SGPA up to Semester 6. The above is just an example.
